This tutorial will show you how to make a top hat with a rolled brim and a bow.

You will need a hat block to make this, it could be a foam head mannequin, a wig mannequin, a plastic bowl or glass bowl. It would help you if you can pin needles on it. If you can’t, you will have a bit more texture on it. This hat is not for beginners, its for intermediate felters. The top fold and the rolled brim takes a considerable amount of time compared to a straight or floppy brim and round top (double time). The tutorial includes the making of the ribbon bow. You can do this hat without a hat block but you will need some tricks and objects to replace the lack off and accept some differences in shape and finish (more ripples). I did a long introduction of 24 minutes to explain the hat and its challenges. You do this and you are good to do many others intricate shapes of hats. You do not need a special shape of block to do this. Just a basic round top head.

Normally this type of rolled brim and folded top edges are stretched and dried over a special sculpted hat block. I bypass this and show you how to do without.
